1. Technical Concepts
ProCote® Soy Polymers are:-
- Water soluble polymers produced from soybean proteins.
- Amphoteric, meaning they carry both positive and negative
charges.
- Chemically modified to control viscosity and charge distribution.
- Supplied as dry powders.
- Dissolved in water under alkaline conditions.
- Available in grades that require no additional alkali.
- Designed to span a range of viscosity and pigment reactivity
levels to suit different applications.
2. Product Function
ProCote® Soy Polymers are:-
- Pigment-interactive because of the product charge, especially
the cationic part.
- Water-holding, due to the hydrated nature of the dissolved
polymer.
- Viscosity-modifying, due to the hydrodynamic effect of the
long-chain dissolved molecule and to the interaction with pigments.
- Good runnability on blade coaters, because of the polymer's
strong protective colloid action.
- Strong binders, which means that the equivalent number of
parts of latex are usually removed when ProCote® is added
to a paper coating formulation.
3. ProCote® Effect on Coating Properties
- Microporosity & Bulk - due to the higher coating void
volume resulting from the pigment interactions of ProCote®.
- Ink Hold Out & Fountain Solution Acceptance - because
of the controlled pore size distribution in the coating. This
gives good ink gloss and minimises water interference on the
press.
- Binder Migration & Mottle Control - by rapidly immobilizing
the coating to ensure uniform distribution of the components.
4. ProCote® Applications
- Paper Coatings
- Paperboard Coatings
- Adhesives
- Water-based Inks
- Rosin Size Dispersions
- Ceiling Tiles
- Casein Replacement
